My copy of The Book of Alchemy arrived about a week ago in a lovely matching envelope. Today, at last, it’s available to the rest of the book loving public.
The Book of Alchemy is an inspiring compilation of essays and writing prompts, “a memoir in essays and a chorus of the most inspiring voices I know”, imagined into existence by Suleika Jaouad.
I got an advance copy because I’ve had the honor of having one of my essays, I Fall in Love, a vignette of my 2023 stay at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, selected twice—first for Suleika’s newsletter the Isolation Journals, and now for inclusion in this beautiful book. What an honor!
It gets better though. Mary Beth and I also received complimentary tickets to an unusual book release/concert celebration, hosted by Suleika and her husband Jon Batiste at the Salt Shed in Chicago later this week.
If you’d like to hear me read my essay I Fall In Love, get comfortable, slip into some headphones and click on the voiceover icon at the top of this newsletter.

Bravo, Sir! Your words are inspiring, as I, like so many, cope with an aging body, and come to know wellness as a sometimes elusive state, yet cling to a sense of optimism born of a deep appreciation of life and all its manifestations.
This is wonderful! Love that your writing is getting some attention. May Day celebrations are gearing up. Perhaps we need to add a poetry and essay reading event.
